The heritage we cherish

This project is about more than just preserving archives. It is about restoring the voices and stories of the people who lived in Ukraine and were part of its culture and historical memory.

Preserved culture and traditions

Jewish history and culture in Ukraine have been silenced for decades, and today we have both the opportunity and the responsibility to rediscover them — openly, honestly, and respectfully.

Evidence Enduring Through Epochs

Researching and cataloging data on available archival collections across the project’s target locations and regions to increase their visibility and accessibility for further wide-ranging interdisciplinary studies.

Cultural Memory Scape

Jews and Ukrainians have lived side by side in Ukraine for over a thousand years—often in peaceful coexistence, through intermarriage and good neighborly relations, but also during times marked by violence.

History Preserving Presence

What makes this project particularly vital is that it tackles an issue of paramount importance for the development of Ukrainian society as a modern political nation.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

The project is part of a UNESCO initiative, implemented by the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy with support from the European Union, to preserve Ukraine's Jewish documentary heritage, honor collective memory, expand access to archives, and promote intercultural dialogue.

The research project «Jewish Heritage in Ukraine: Interdisciplinary Reflections Through the Lenses of Archival Documents, Culture, History and Literature» focuses on the comprehensive study and systematization of data on existing archival collections in target cities and regions. The information gathered will serve as a basis for promoting these materials and ensuring their availability for further large-scale interdisciplinary research.

An important outcome of the project will be the preparation of a series of academic publications. These include an interdisciplinary collective monograph «Jewish Heritage in Ukraine: Culture, History, Literature and Beyond», an anthology «Ukrainian-Jewish Relations in the Dissident Movement», and a textbook «Anthology of Jewish Literature in Ukraine» which will highlight various aspects of Jewish heritage in the Ukrainian context.

As part of the project, the Virtual Museum of Jewish Heritage at the Center for Research on the History and Culture of Eastern European Judaism at NaUKMA will be enriched with new scientific research and archival findings. All materials will be available to the public.

A special focus of the project is to promote knowledge about Jewish heritage in Ukraine among the professional community and the general public. This will be achieved through conferences, round tables, blog posts, and online discussions.
