This anthology brings together texts on the history of the Ukrainian and Jewish resistance movements. The experience of mutual understanding and comradeship first emerged among dissidents in Soviet labor camps and developed into a strong sense of solidarity during the 1970s. This solidarity found expression in their joint struggle against the abuses of the camp administration through protest actions, hunger strikes, collective petitions, and the production and smuggling of samvydav across the Iron Curtain.
Over time, this solidarity transcended national borders. Jewish dissidents in Israel founded the Society for Ukrainian–Jewish Relations, whose activities were soon joined by Ukrainian participants. Together, they challenged long-standing stereotypes and mutual alienation. During the 1990s, this dialogue continued through conferences held in Kyiv and Jerusalem.
The texts included in this anthology will be of interest to scholars of resistance movements, interethnic relations, and to a broad readership.
